Hotel Helka’s and Accor’s Press Release in Finnish:
Machine Translation to English: International Hotel Group Accor Enters Finland – Helsinki’s Hotel Helka to Become an ibis Styles Hotel The transformation of the historic Hotel Helka into an ibis Styles hotel marks a significant milestone, strengthening Accor’s growing presence in Northern Europe and the Nordic region. Located in Kamppi, Helsinki, the 157-room hotel will open in late 2027 as part of the international hotel brand, whose interiors highlight distinctive design and local culture. Helsinki – Accor, one of the world’s leading hospitality groups, is expanding into Finland for the first time after signing a franchise agreement to add Hotel Helka in Helsinki’s Kamppi district to the ibis Styles network. Originally established in 1928, the hotel will continue operations under the name ibis Styles Helsinki Helka. The 157-room property is scheduled to open in late 2027. It is situated within walking distance of central Helsinki’s key attractions, cultural sites, and shopping destinations. ibis Styles is an international brand focused on affordable accommodation and creative, design-led interiors, with each hotel concept tailored around its own story and local culture. The brand combines creative design, comfort, and the well-known reliability of the ibis family. The ibis Styles network comprises over 700 hotels across more than 60 countries, with more than 160 additional hotels in the pipeline worldwide. Opening in late 2027, amenities at ibis Styles Helsinki Helka will include a breakfast restaurant, separate saunas for women and men, and parking options via the hotel’s own parking lot and an adjacent underground garage. Hotel guests will also have access to a neighboring fitness center. In recent years, Accor has expanded its footprint across Northern Europe by introducing brands such as ibis Styles, Mercure, Mövenpick, and TRIBE to regional markets. Expanding into Finland further solidifies the group’s position in the region. Accor offers local hotel owners the opportunity to leverage internationally recognized hospitality brands, expansive distribution networks, and adaptable partnership models.
“This agreement is a significant milestone for Accor as we expand into Finland for the first time and further strengthen our position across the Nordics. The Nordic region is increasingly attracting international hotel brands, as local owners recognize the value of partnership to reach new guests and drive business growth. Conversion-friendly brands like ibis Styles, paired with franchise models, have proven particularly attractive here. They allow owners to preserve the local identity of their properties and maintain daily management while benefiting from the scale and reach of an international hotel group,” says Yannick Wagner, Vice President of Development for Accor’s Premium, Midscale, and Economy brands in Europe and North Africa.
“Hotel Helka has always been deeply rooted in Helsinki and the local community. Joining the ibis Styles network allows us to preserve our hotel’s distinct character, values, and history that our guests know and cherish. At the same time, we benefit from the visibility, expertise, and global reach provided by one of the world’s leading hospitality groups. We look forward to welcoming guests to this exciting new chapter in our hotel’s history,” says Mikaela Pomrén, CEO of Hotelliyhtymä Oy and General Manager of Hotel Helka. Upon opening, ibis Styles Helsinki Helka will join Accor’s booking platform and loyalty program, ALL – Accor Live Limitless. Members gain access to Accor’s global hotel network, member-only rates, unique experiences, and a wide array of rewards spanning stays, dining, entertainment, and lifestyle perks. Hotel Helka’s history dates back to 1928, when the Young Women’s Christian Association of Finland (YWCA / Suomen NNKY) established safe accommodation and a community gathering space in Helsinki for young women relocating for work or study. The building remains under the ownership of Suomen NNKY. It was designed by trailblazing Finnish architect Wivi Lönn, the first woman in Finland to establish her own independent architectural firm. The building has provided accommodation continuously since 1928 and remains a recognizable fixture of Helsinki’s cityscape. Today, Hotel Helka is celebrated for its Finnish design classics—such as furniture by Alvar Aalto and Artek—as well as its commitment to social responsibility. Hotelliyhtymä Oy will continue operating the hotel after its transition to ibis Styles. Because Hotelliyhtymä Oy is wholly owned by the YWCA of Finland, a portion of the hotel’s proceeds will continue to support the YWCA’s mission to empower women and girls both in Finland and internationally.
Conclusion
I have walked past this Helka hundreds of times, and I even had an apartment in the same block when I lived in Helsinki and attended the Helsinki School of Economics, whose campus used to be nearby.
The location is quite good, although most of the tourist activities are a bit on the other side of the city center.
It’s remarkable that Accor has at least six different brands and hotels in Tallinn alone (Swissotel, Movenpick, Novotel, ibis, ibis styles & Handwritten Collection), yet this is their entry to Finland.
